Art 1 Fairy Tale

Art 1

In two short paragraphs explain your fairy tale recreation. In the first, explain how you have changed your character physically and how you have changed the setting of the scene through time or location. In the second paragraph, critique your time with the acrylic paint. What were some challenges that you faced? Did you enjoy painting? What other media would you have rather used instead?

  1. I painted The Happy Mask Salesman from "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask". In the original work he was depicted as a middle aged traveler selling masks off his back. In my rendition I changed the setting to a modern dark ally in the city. I also changed his cloths and which masks he sells.

I've had a little bit of experience with painting but this piece had smaller areas that I had to cover, and I didn't help that I only used a couple of brushes but that's my fault. With painting you really have to think about what the color is supposed to look like and the tone of it. The skin color was one of the hardest things to get right in this painting. I would say painting is one of the harder art mediums because you not only have to worry about color but things like brush strokes, layers, and paint thickness. I prefer pencil because I have more practice with it and I find the simplicity attracting.

  3. In my painting I put cinderella in the 80's. I put her in a diner and in the waitress outfit even with the rollerblades. I changed her physical appearance by making her african american with long, brown, curly hair.

Some challenges I faced were that all the colors I needed weren't in acrylic paint. I didn't really enjoy painting because I didn't have any time and it looked bad. I don't know what other media I would have used but I know that I would have spent less time on the drawing and gave myself more time to paint. Especially because I just covered up almost everything I drew with the paint.

  4. My drawing was of the famous fairytale, Red Riding hood. In my version of the drawing, I changed the timeline so it's more modern. I changed the Big Bad Wolf to Red Riding Hood's hunting dog and it's a wolf pup. The last thing I edited in the story, was changing Red Riding Hood into a werewolf, and in the drawing she is in her human form but her eyes are that of a wolf.

Some difficulties I faced in this was blending the oil pastels all together. It all ended up well at the end but it made finishing it very difficult and time-consuming than if we just used colored pencils (which I would have preferred). The finer details were easier to color because I used colored pencils instead of the pastels. All in all, I had fun with this project even though sometimes I wanted to rip my hair out from frustration.

  5. I chose Snow White. I changed it by making the men dwarfs into girls so I did a gender change. I also downsized the dwarfs to 3 instead of 7 . I then changed the location by putting snow white into a castle instead of the cottage she was living in. and finally she finds a magical piece if fruit that makes her always happy and cheerful.
I faced difficulty sizing everything, and making sure it looked correct and proportioned, but I feel like it turned out well so far. I like coloring with colored pencils and I don't do as well with oil pastels. They are a lot more messy and can be challenging to blend but other than that this project went fairly well.

  6. My drawing was of Alice in Wonderland. The changes I made to my story was that Alice fell into Wonderland through a cell phone, all the characters represent a different type of social media, and finally Alice is the evil queen. The time and setting of my drawing is in the social web.

There were many big challenges of making this drawing. First was just drawing the project to how I wanted it to look like. Also blending the oil pastels together was tricky since I have never worked with oil pastels. I enjoyed this project because we got to basically make our own fairytale.

  7. I chose The Little Mermaid. I changed her fish Flounder into a piranha so then he is seen as vicious and not nice. Ariel has black hair and she is turned into sort of a grungy type of mermaid. She is laying on a rock with the landscape behind her being dead instead of alive.
Difficulties faced were the blending of the pastels. I would have rather used livestock markers or colored pencils because the pastels are harder to blend and livestock markers are easier. I would have rather used the colored pencils because it is easier to get more detail and you have more colors you can choose from.

  9. I chose my fairytale to be the “Tortoise and the Hare.” I changed the characters from animals to people. I changed the sport being played from racing to basketball. I also changed the time setting from a long time ago to December 12, 2015. My picture of the story shows the underdog player dunking on a player who thought he would easily win.
When I was using pastels it was difficult to be very detailed with them. They would sometimes smear too much and go out of the lines. I would rather use colored pencils. It is easier to be detailed with them because the tip is more exact than the pastels. They don’t smear very much also. I enjoyed the project because we got to make our own creative stories.

  10. Well first off I did The Lorax, which to change the character in a physical form I turned him into a girl. I took away the Lorax's mustache and I change it to pig tails with a pink bow. To change the scene of the story I put aliens as the antagonists of the project. The aliens give a new thought process of the project so the viewer believes that the setting is taking place on a different planet that is home to aliens.

When we used the pastels to color our projects I found it difficult to color and blend small objects that were on my project because they were just too small. I would have rather used colored pencil or something smaller so it was easier to control where the color was placed. I feel as though my project went fairly well for the time I had to do the project and the proportions of the objects.

  11. I chose Hansel and Gretel for this painting. The first thing I changed was that my my hero became the villain. I changed it that Hansel and Gretel are bad wizards. Also the old woman threw diamonds on the ground instead of bread or stones, and the diamonds lead to a castle not to a cottage in the middle of a forest.
I enjoyed painting with the acrylic paint even though I had some issues to paint the faces of Hansel and Gretel because they were very small and it was hard to find a perfect brush for this. So it was a little bit difficult for me to paint smaller things. Maybe we could have used colored pencils.-Julia

  12. I chose the three little pigs for my painting. Im also changed the characters to The Three Bad Pigs and The Little Wolf. I made the pigs bigger than the wolf to make them look meaner. I changed the scene of the fairy tale to taking place on Mars. It is taking place a 125 years into the future.
The acrylics were very time consuming. It took me along time to paint them because I had to mixed the paints together to make the right color. I enjoyed painting very much and it was one of my favorite things about the project. I would have used markers or sharpies because it would have looked a lot better. But overall I think my project turned out very nice.

  13. i did snowwhite.
    the things i changed.

    1. CHANGED THE GENDER OF SNOW AND THE PRINCE.

    2. mad it so snow whanted to kill the prince.

    3. changed the dwarfs to goblins.

i did not enjoy acrylic one bit probably because i was pressed for time and i'm not good at doing thin lines with paint brushes . i would like it if we could have used pencils or pens. -hugo

  14. I chose the fairy tale of The princess and the Pea, or Once Upon a Mattress. I chose this fairy tale because it is uncommon and unique. By changing the time from around 1835 ish to the Cretaceous Period (Caveman time). I changed the main character, the Princess to the main character being the Pea. The setting (bedroom) now takes place in a cave in a rocky grassland.
Painting this project did not take very long for me, although my painting in general was not very good. Acrylic paint does not mix as well as tempera does so it was very hard to get two colors to mix and look decent together, acrylic also dries very fast. I enjoyed the project a lot because it was not only very fun to do but it was super creative. I would of liked to be able to use a mixture of acrylic paints and tempera paints.
