Social Issue

Write about your poster. Answer a number of these questions in your writing. What are some other questions that come to mind? Why do you feel the way you do? What are your arguments for or against?  What – or who – has influenced your decisions.  What is the "flip side" of your issue? What might the other side have to say? Can you see their point of view?  What is your reasoning for choosing your stand?  Is your artwork intended to offend? Who would be offended? Does the artist have a right to offend? Critique your project. Does it get your point across? How? Is there a focal point (center of interest)? Does it show effective use of Principles of Design? How?

  1. I feel that bullying is bad. Although it is bad, there is really no way to make mean people stop being mean. It is in there DNA. So a huge part of being bullied is that the victim needs to have courage. I painted two canvases. One states “do small things with great love”. Mother Teresa said this, and I think that it relates a lot to bullying. I myself have never felt bullied, nor do I feel like I bully people. I think that I can still make a difference, and although I cannot make bullies stop being mean I CAN do small things with great love. The second canvas states, have courage dear heart. This is actually a quote from Narnia. I think this relates to the victims in bullying. They need to have courage to stand up to bullies, and to understand their self worth. I think this project does need a little explaining, but for the most part the viewers can see where the canvas connects to bullying.

  2. Bullying is beyond horrible. It doesn't make anyone feel good. My poster that I did says, "Blowing out someones candle doesn't make yours shine brighter." -Unknown. This is very true, if you are mean to someone it never makes you feel better on the inside. Even if you are mad at someone and say something to someone it may make you feel better for a moment, but later on you will begin to feel bad. It kind of goes with the saying have you filled someones bucket today? It does in the way that if you are nice to someone then there candle will shine brighter and brighter but if you are mean then it will get dimmer and dimmer.

My poster is about gender equality. I feel that people should be treated equally no matter what sex they are. People’s gender is given, so they shouldn’t be judged because of that. People shouldn’t be judged by things which they can not control. I have seen some of the strongest and hardest working people be women instead of men. As long as the job can be done, it shouldn’t matter what gender they are. Personally, it doesn’t make sense to me how people can believe other humans are inferior to them based on something such as gender. It wasn’t intended to offend anybody, but I guess if it does, it does. People have the right to their own opinions. Artists do have the right to offend others. Their peace is an extension of themselves, so the piece often has an opinion.
I think my piece gets my point across. It is a simplistic design, but it is intended to be that way. It wasn’t my highest quality piece, but I don’t think it was bad.

  4. I believe that every race in America is equal. Everyone that is a U.S. citizen deserves that same rights and should all be treated the same. I was influenced to paint this social justice issue because of all the current stands against equal rights. The other side of my argument is that some people that not everyone in America should be treated equal because of their religion or race. I can not see why other people believe that all Americans can’t be treated equal. I stand with equal rights because race or religion doesn’t make us different from each other as Americans. My artwork is not intended to offend anyone. People who could be offend are people who don’t believe in equal rights. My painting gets the point across by showing different races all over the colors of the United States flag. The center of interest of my painting are the hands prints that are mixed together across the thirteen stripes. It uses the principles of design because of the different lines going across the canvas.

  5. When I was painting this picture I asked myself a number of questions. What are some other reasons why domestic violence victims don’t seek help? Why do they feel the need to stay quiet? Who in my life is suffering right now from domestic violence? I knew someone experiencing domestic violence, and it’s just been something I’m passionately against. Domestic violence causes mental and physical damage to the victim. When I was researching this topic, I read some stories of domestic violence victims about why they stayed with their abuser, and that affected what I wrote on the walls. Also, this artwork is intended to offend the people that don’t try to help the victim because they think everything is ok from what the victim said. These phrases are meant to trigger the outside person looking into the life of the victim into getting the help that person needs. Moreover, I added subtle details to the painting like the non gender specific people because when it comes to domestic violence anyone can affected by it and anyone can be the abuser. I think this painting gets my point across very blatantly because you can tell from the words and the marks on the body that it’s some kind of abuse. The words on the wall also suggest that it’s someone close to the victim, so it’s probably domestic abuse. I think this uses emphasis a lot from the red letters on the dark background to the duct tape on the mouth of the person. There’s a lot to look at, but it all works together to show the emotion I’m trying to get across to the viewer.

My poster is about our nation's motto "In God We Trust." I believe that there is nothing wrong with our motto, but people feel it is in violation of the US constitution since it clearly violates the separation of church and state. I understand why others may want a change in the motto as it references to Christianity, but I believe our nations motto should stay the same. My poster has God marked out to show those who believe that references to God should be removed from the constitution and our nation's motto should be changed. This poster will most likely need to be explained, but I believe it gets the point across.
