  1. The process I went through when illustrating my Hero/Self portrait was finding the measurements to sketch my drawing, sketching it all out, and then the coloring and shading process of the whole thing. My triumphs of the black and white part was getting all the measurements right and this led to the sketch of it looking really good. The troubles of it were the hair and shading of the face was really tough to get correct. The color portion was the same for the measurements and the sketched out part. I really liked using the color pencil opposed to the pencil because I found it easier to make consistent color. It made that part so much easier. I chose Superman as my hero because he seems to be a lot like me. He in the movies seems to be a really calm and laid back until he has to fight crime. This is very similar to my personality and I thought the drawing would show that no matter how different we look, we carry similar personalities.

  2. For my hero/role model I chose Drew Brees. I chose him for a variety of reason. One of the biggest reasons is because my favorite NFL team is the Saints. I like the Saints because my cousin used to play for them from 2008-2010. This was during the time when they won the Super Bowl in 2009. My cousin was a tight end and often talked with Drew and was involved with him. My cousin has told me many stories of how nice he was and how welcome he made him feel at the Saints. Drew even invited him over for Thanksgiving one year and got to enjoy it with him. I always thought this was really cool because Drew Brees is a pretty big star in the NFL. In a lot of cases you hear about how mean an NFL player or star is outside of the big stage and how much their teammates or coaches don’t like them because they are full of it. This is one of the biggest reasons why I consider him a role model. Despite being famous and a star in the NFL, he still treats everyone with respect and is just as good of a guy off the field as he is on it. I admire this a lot about him and I think it is a good thing for kids and others to look up to. This is why I chose him for my project.
Blending the colors is very different than just coloring something in. I colored the entire face with just a light coat of skin color. I thought it looked pretty good but then Mr. Mitchell came over and darkened some other spots along with blending the skin with some browns and blacks. This gave the picture a whole new look that seemed much more life like. This is very tricky to see in a picture or photo and is something that was tough for me to recognize also. Many times after you blend something with a different color it doesn’t really look right, but once you finish everything with that color, it looks a lot better and more lifelike. Overall, I would say blending colors is not easy and is something that needs to be practiced constantly. However, it is well worth it because it gives the picture a much more real life and alive look to it.

  3. For my hero / villain project I chose Belle from beauty and the beast to be the other half of my face. I chose Belle because in all honesty she was the first thing to come to mind and we are polar opposites because she seems happy and cheerful all the time and really outgoing and I am happy but I am not as outgoing. I think the most challenging part of this project was trying to make the hair look realistic. Also trying to use 4 colors for each part of the face was tricky for me as well. Overall this project gave me a good challenge and was fun for the most part!

    1. I loved the shading characteristics that you put on your project. I feel as though the shading definitely added a good effect on your project and made it stand out from the others.

  4. The black and white shading part of the project was easy for me. I found it easy because shading was easy to make different contrast then the colored pencil. It was also tricky shading because you had to make sure certain places were darker than others.

The colored pencil part of this project was very hard, but fun. At first the colored pencil wasn't shading right and then as more as the drawing progressed the color change. The hardest part of the colored pencil was trying to shade the hair.

I chose Bella Swan off of Twilight. The reason I chose her was because I wanted a challenge with how dark her hair was. Also I was told that one day I would become a vampire by Mr. Mitchell, so I though she would best fit that role

  5. I chose my hero to be David Johnson. He is my hero because he is from Iowa. He is a nice guy and he visited my friend’s sister Tessa one time. He’s a good guy who takes time out of his day to improve other’s days.I watched him play in college at UNI. Now I get to watch him in the NFL. He held a football camp last summer in Cedar Falls and I went with some friends I got to talk to him a little and it was fun.-Noah

  6. The black and white shading portion of the project was pretty easy to do, but it was hard to find a happy medium between how dark or light areas needed to be. It was easy to erase and redo an area with the pencil. I feel as though using a pencil allowed for me to make the project better.

When using colored pencils on the other portion of the project, it was hard to blend the colors. The colors were hard to determine how dark or how many colors to put in an area to make it look realistic. I chose Cinderella because she is kind, determined, and thoughtful. I feel as though Cinderella and I resemble the same kind of characteristics.

  7. It was easy at first while drawing my eye, nose and mouth. My chin took me a couple tries before I finally got it right. My biggest struggle with the black and white side was shading my face. My eyes were kind of simple and easy to do. My cheeks and lips were the hardest to do because I had to get it the right shade or it just look completely wrong.
The coloring part of my drawing was the was my least liked part of the project because, it took me the longest to do. I hated how I had to use five different colors just to get it to look the right color, but i'm really glad I did. I liked the drawing part of it the best because it was the easiest to do. I also liked the part when i got to blend the colors together it really made it look more realistic even if it was the hardest part. In the end i was glad how it turned out. The reason why I chose the flash as my super hero was because I like to watch the show with my brother, and I kinda consider myself fast like the flash. He likes to help people, and he is a really good guy. I like to help people and i'm a good person as well, and that's one of the reasons why I picked him for my hero.

  8. When I was measuring out the face I had a hard time getting my eyes to look right. but I had a rather easy time with the lips. While I shaded the eyes it started to turn out much better then it had been in just the sketch stage. The nose ended up looking a little larger than I planned but It ended up not looking too bad. The neck on the sketch and shade was a lot wider than on the super Hero/villian.

When I was trying to blend the colors of Harley Quinn's face it started to look a little orange so I started to blend a little more white and brown into the orange patches. As I continued to blend the colors it started to turn back to the correct shade of peach and tan. I liked how the eye turned out with the greens blues and grey with the black looked as it continued to darken with each pencil stroke it became more and more realistic.

  9. The process I went through when I made my black and white drawing was finding the right measurement for it. Then I started to make a sketch and finally I began to shade it. My triumphs of the drawing was doing the my glasses and my troubles were shading my eyes and my hair.
At the color portion I had the same measurement and then I started to sketch it again. What I didn’t liked about the coloring pencils was that it was harder to use them and it was more difficult to shade as with the shading pencils but I really like how it looks like.
I chose Wonder Woman as my superhero because I heard a lot about her and she was the only female superhero I knew in my childhood. She was a very strong and powerful woman so I kind of think she is a very cool person and I admire her personality. -Julia

  10. When doing the black and white portion, I struggled with proportions. While I was measuring everything out, I still had a hard time deciding if the forehead was the right size or the eyes were too wide and the like. However, shading was rather fun on that side. I'm very pale, and it takes very little pencil to accurately get my skin tone. I also didn't have to mess with the folds above your eye very much because of my glasses, which was nice. The color portion was really fun, but the hair killed me. It took days on its own, and my hand cramped up after each class. Regardless, it was fun to play with colors and see how they interacted with each other. I chose the queen of hearts due to our similar physical features. Pale skin, large forehead, blue eyes. Beyond that, she does unfortunately remind me of myself in the way that she has to have everything her way. She's very controlling and always thinks she's right. This side of my really only comes out in group projects, but boy is it burdensome.

    1. I thought your project was really cool. The way you did the Queen of Heart, I thought it was very interesting to look at. Your coloring skills and drawing skills are out of this world

  11. The black and white part of the project was easy the actual drawing part was hard for me because I have "dumb fingers" but the shading was easy. Besides the fact I shaded it to hard and I became black.

The colored bit was a lot harder because of two things I didnt want to mess up my guy during the drawing part and shading the color was also hard.

    I enjoyed this overall -Logan

  12. The process I went through while making my black and white drawing was measurements. Finding the measurements was somewhat hard because you had to make it look like your face. Another problem I had was shading at first my face was very dark so I had to erase it to make it lighter. But overall I liked the shading part because you were able to make your drawing more lifelike.
The colors I used the most during this project were black, gray, and a dark blue or violet. I liked using color pencil because you were able to mix colors to make it look like the picture. But it was also hard to find the right colors to blend to make it look like the picture. I chose Batman because it is batman and batman is pretty cool.

  13. HUGO DAHLEN

I had a few struggles and not that many triumph, one of my struggles was that i looked like a heroin addict because my shading and i also had some problem getting everything were it was supposed to be. I also had trouble making my hair look realistic. But one thing i am proud is the lips i manage to draw

I don't really dont like coloring but i like this assignment because it i feel like my character looked good and i did Heath ledger as the joker . Liked the way the faced looked but the hair is unrealistic and i wish i could redo it. I think that in a kinda funny person so i picked the joker…… get it?

Logan your picture made me laugh i don't know why it was just amusing to me.

  14. The process I went through with the Black and white drawing in some places was hard, but some parts were easy. The measuring part was probably the hardest thing to do. Because you had to look at the picture of your face, and try and make sure the whole picture looks right. You have to make sure that every part in the drawing looks normal, and there are no weird looking spots. One of the more easier parts in this project was probably the shading. Shading the whole picture wasn't that hard, but you still had to be precise, because you don't want it looking like a cartoon character. The process I went through was measurements, then getting everything lined up and looking good, and then we finally shaded it.

The coloring portion of this projects was kind of fun. It wasn't too hard, but figuring out your villain or superhero part was pretty hard. You had to choose a character that fits you. The reasonI chose Medusa, is because I think this was the character that most described me as a person. I wasn't like a nice little princess, and I wasn't like a dark mean villain. This was right in between, and I feel like this fit me the most out of all of them. I liked using color pencils because you could choose what colors you wanted. My favorite part of using color pencils was the part where you blend. I like seeing how well some of the colors, that I never thought would work together, ended up working very well together. The coloring portion was definantly my favorite part in this project.
